Fundamentals of Chemistry: CHE 1429
Chemistry is the study of material substances and their interactions with one another. In some philosophies, chemistry is called the central science because all other sciences require various levels of chemical knowledge, but the reverse is not always true.
Fundamentals of Chemistry is a beginning course for students in applied sciences who need only one semester of general chemistry. I attempt to fulfill two roles for the course. First, the class serves as a replacement for high school chemistry. Students who have not had high school chemistry or need a refresher course before continuing on to general chemistry (CHE 1479) are recommended to take this course. Second, the course serves as one of the basic courses for nursing students. However, Fundamentals of Chemistry does not fulfill the requirements for any science major nor for preprofessional students in health related fields (premed). This course also does not meet the prerequisite for General Chemistry 2 (CHE 1489) nor for Organic Chemistry 1 (CHE 2331). However, students may be able to transfer this class as fulfillment for the chemistry requirement in certain nursing programs.
The course includes instruction in the scientific method, the structure, properties and changes in matter, types of chemical reactions (single replacement, decomposition, etc), quantitive relationships in reactions, solutions, equilibrium, pH, buffers, the functional groups of organic chemistry, and nuclear chemistry.
