Includes 3 hours of lecture and 3 hours of laboratory per week
Purpose Statement.
Chemistry 1479 and 1489 are designed to present the basic principles and theories of chemistry. The main purpose is to introduce students to the excitement of chemical discoveries while giving them a solid understanding of the basic principles and concepts in chemistry. We will relate abstract chemical concepts to specific real-world events in a logical, flexible way.
Intended Outcomes for the Course
Students should understands basic chemical terms and concepts, be able to make and interpret chemical measurements, solve mathematical problems in chemistry, which usually entail drawing conclusions from chemical evidence and know how to find, read, and use chemical information. Essentially the students should be able to use the scientific method to solve scientific problems.
1. Students should be able to analyze or design an experiment or write a paper related to the use of the scientific method addressing the components, uses, and limitations of the method.
2. Students should be able to integrate previous knowledge, external resources, and classroom lectures into their problem solving during exams, or preparing laboratory reports, research papers, and/or other assignments.
3. Students should be able to and evaluate good vs. bad science and be aware of gray areas.
4. Students should have the ability to apply these scientific problem solving skills and concepts to current issues.
5. The student should be able to use a spreadsheet, word processor, the internet and e-mail.
